Two weekends ago Amelia and I had the idea to take $1,000 and buy
gift cards from local businesses as a way to help them in this time
when their businesses are fighting to stay afloat. A few days later my
friend Tatum Owenby suggested the challenge and kicked it off with a
$500 donation from his business Home Helpers. What began as a
personal decision to help has turned into a message of hope and
support from people throughout the community.
Since its beginning less than 2 weeks ago we have eclipsed the
$10,000 mark in cash and in-kind donations with no end in sight. We
have done our best to make sure the donations are ending up in the
right hands and the money is being spent with locally owned business
who support Springdale during the time. It has been rewarding thus far
seeing the gratitude from those who have received the gifts.
We were able to set up meals that have already fed 1 shift of the
Springdale Fire Department and over the next 2 weeks will feed all 3
shifts and nearly 100 firemen. Last Saturday we were able to take 140
doughnuts, kolaches and apple fritters over to the Springdale Police
Department. And this upcoming week we will be delivering $1,000
worth of gift cards to frontline health care workers in Springdale who
are ensuring the health of our city right now.
In addition, we have given shelter to a few people who have fallen on
hard times during this crisis. We have distributed card to those to
whom a meal would otherwise not be an option at all right now. We
have dropped off gifts to individuals who are delivering hope to others
in the community through their actions and sometimes simply their
words. We even had the chance to hand deliver a check from a local
church to the Springdale Senior Center to help with Meals on Wheels.
Finally, we have been able to give away these gift cards to the people
of Live Springdale. To shine a little light and provide a little fun in a time
where some of us aren't having the best time. We appreciate your
willingness to play our little games and post your favorite photos and
memories and such to give some different perspective to others on
where we all may be.
