On Tuesday night the Springdale City Council met to discuss the
business of the city in this adjusted living environment we are currently
in. There are very few if any of us who truly like paying taxes, but all of
us are affected by infrastructure. Last night the Springdale City Council
was asked to support a resolution stating the Springdale supports the
upcoming continuation of the 1% sales tax to support continued
highway, interstate and road development.
Arkansas Highway Commissioner Philip Taldo spoke on behalf of the
Commission to answer any questions council members may have.
While the measure was defeated in committee 4-3 it passed with great
support 6-1 with Mike Overton voting against the infrastructure funding
resolution. If the funding is allowed to expire in 2023 Springdale alone
would lose $1.6 million in revenue used to support our roadways in
town.
In addition, the loss of that money would jeopardize the future of
critically important projects such as the 612 Northern Springdale
Bypass from I-49 to Hwy 265, the widening of portions of Highway 112
from Fayetteville to Bentonville and the XNA connector. Further, many
smaller projects would be affected by the loss of that state turnback
money.
It is in the overwhelming best interest of our city that the measure
passes on the ballot in November so we do not slow down
development throughout our city in a time when we're seeing such
excellent momentum.
