City Council Committee meetings aren't always the most exciting or memorable. Often they are long and somewhat slow, but much of the real work is done there. The long discussions and details hammered out in those meetings can lead one to boredom from time to time. However, the statement read at the end of the meeting this past Monday is one that won't soon be forgotten and deserves for many reasons to be well remembered.

Kathy Jaycox, sitting Councilwoman from Ward 4, read a statement at the end of the meeting that announced her decision to withdraw her name from consideration from the upcoming election for her current seat. She will continue to serve, as she has done so well over the years, until her term expires just after the first of the year. At which time she and her husband will be moving to better accommodate their needs into a different home and out of her ward.

Springdale has seen dramatic change since Mrs. Jaycox was elected in the Fall of 1998. I for one was a high school senior. That seems like a lifetime ago. The city has doubled in population during her time at City Hall, growing to what many believe will be around 85,000 when the new Census is counted. We have seen our community become rich in culture and diversity and our school district become the largest in the state. We've become the heart of the Razorback Greenway with nearly all paths crossing through our beautiful city.

During that time we have seen the construction of the Don Tyson Parkway, a major East-West corridor leading to development out around I-49. We have seen the state of the art Arvest Ballpark built for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and Arkansas Children's Northwet Adjacent to it. West Springdale is now becoming a medical corridor due largely in part to the infrastructure put in place over the last few years. The new Animel Shelter and Pet Adoption Center is nearly complete and Mrs. Jaycox has always been a champion for animals in our city.

In all honesty, there are far too many things to list them all. Kathy has been integral in the growth and development of our city and she deserves the utmost respect for the time she has served the people of Springdale. Best I can figure she has attended somewhere around 1,100 City Council and committee meeting and probably done more leg work researching issues brought to the council than many could ever image. Thank you Mrs. Jaycox for your love and dedication and the service you have so wonderfully provided to the people of Springdale.
